Meghan Markle has reportedly been baptised into the Church of England in a secret ceremony led by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

The divorced American actress is said to have been formally introduced to the Anglican faith with Prince Harry at her side ahead of their wedding in May.

The Daily Mail reported that the 45-minute service took place at the Chapel Royal on Tuesday evening, using holy water from the River Jordan.

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall were among the guests at what was described as a private affair.

Ms Markle, 36, and Prince Harry will wed on May 19 at St George’s Chapel in Westminster, with the Archbishop of Canterbury also leading that ceremony.

Holy water from the River Jordan was poured on the former Suits star’s head as part of the religious ritual, the Daily Mail reported.

Kensington Palace declined to comment but it was reported this weekend that Ms Markle, who was a member of the Protestant faith and went to a Catholic high school, was due to convert imminently.

Her mother Doria Ragland is Protestant while her father Thomas Markle is Episcopalian.

The decision for Ms Markle to be baptised and confirmed before the wedding will be seen as a nod to the Queen's strong faith and traditions within the monarchy.

Shortly before her wedding, the Duchess of Cambridge was confirmed.

Kate's husband the Duke of Cambridge, as a future king, will one day be Supreme Governor of the Church of England.
