Health Secretary Matt Hancock will host a press conference today.

Mr Hancock is expected to address the nation from Downing Street at 5pm.

It comes after Boris Johnson hailed a “crucial milestone” in the vaccination programme, with figures released on Monday expected to show that all older residents in England’s care homes have been offered first doses.

Mr Johnson said the rollout “will only accelerate from here on” after the daily number of vaccine doses nearly exceeded 600,000 for the first time.

In total, 8,977,329  people have received the first dose of the vaccine, while 491,053 have received both doses.

On Saturday a record 598,389 people received a first dose of the vaccine.

Despite the increase in vaccinations, Health and Social Care Minister Helen Whately said its “too soon” for families to visit residents.

“I know that relatives are desperate to go and see there family members, I know residents desperately want to have visits,” she told BBC Breakfast.

“At the moment it’s too soon. We’ve had care home residents only just vaccinated. It takes time to build up immunity and also we have really high rates of Covid still in the wider community.

“I’m saying to care homes please keep using the PPE, keep doing all the testing that they’re doing at the moment. We still have to keep on being vigilant.”
