Severe delays and flights cancelled at London airports as snow hits runways

Martin Coulter25 July 2018

Airport bosses delayed and cancelled flights throughout London as heavy snowfall hit runways up and down the country.

Flights at Stansted, Gatwick, Heathrow, and London City Airports were all affected on Sunday - with flights unable to land at Luton earlier due to adverse conditions.

The high volume of delays and cancellations led to bosses recommending UK flyers contact their airlines for the latest update on their particular flights.

A spokesman for Gatwick Airport said earlier they were operating as normal but "snow and extreme weather" could cause delays and some cancellations.

Heathrow Airport said its "top priority is the safety of passengers" and apologised to those whose travel was affected by the day's weather.

As of 2pm, London Luton Airport had reopened its runway to both departing and incoming flights.

London City Airport warned passengers delays and cancellations were likely but assured they were "doing [their] best" to get back on schedule.

"Kindly check with your airline for the latest information and your flight status."

Southend Airport also announced it was struggling with the harsh weather, saying its staff were "doing all they can" to minimise disruption.

Birmingham Airport was among the most severely affected, with a number of flights being suspended while staff cleared the runway.
