A police inspector in Manchester has shared a touching letter from a young boy who thanked officers for protecting the public during the Arndale shopping centre attack.

The hand-drawn note was slipped under the windscreen wipers of a police patrol car on the city centre on Sunday.

It was written from a boy called Adam two days after five people were injured during an attack at the Manchester shopping centre at around 11.15am Friday.

Sharing a picture of the card online, Inspector Jon Middleton said it acted as "a great reminder to us of why we do what we do".

"I'd like to say huge thanks for your lovely card and kind words-it brought a happy tear to my eye," he tweeted.

"We would love to meet you and you could sit in a police car and try on some of the equipment, although I'm afraid we can't let you play with a taser."

Another police officer took to social media to say his team had also received a card from Adam.

"He didn’t just do this one, he took the time to write them out for numerous officers working across the city over the weekend," he said.

Member for the public were quick to praise the boy for taking the time to make the note with @Spaniels_Rule writing that Adam's "parents should be proud".

Another Twitter user added: "That is so heartwarming. Hope Adam gets to meet you all and you make his day."
