Manchester and Liverpool united in memory of Hillsborough

23 September 2012

Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra shook hands on the Anfield pitch today as their two teams met in the first Liverpool home game since the new Hillsborough revelations.

The Liverpool and Manchester United players both wore red tracksuit tops with "96" on the back, and there was big applause from the crowd for the pre-match handshake.

The behaviour inside the ground was described as impeccable, with the Manchester United fans applauding at the end of the singing of You'll Never Walk Alone'.

Flowers, shirts and cards were placed outside the Shankly Gates and by the memorial to the victims of the tragedy 23 years ago.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had written a letter which was handed to United fans as they went into the ground, appealing for there to be no vile chants about the tragedy.

Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton presented a tribute of 96 roses to Liverpool legend Ian Rush, as the respective captains Steven Gerrard and Ryan Giggs released 96 ballloons to remember the 96 Liverpool fans who went to a football match on 15 April 1989 and never came home.
