London cinema-goers are paying up to twice as much as film fans in other parts of the UK to see the latest blockbusters.

The Odeon cinema chain charges up to £8.50 more per ticket to see new releases in the West End than in other major cities.

It comes as it emerged the chain bumps up prices by £1 for the latest Hollywood films such as Interstellar compared to British films such as Mr Turner, starring Timothy Spall.

Odeon says the charge is part of a "dynamic pricing policy" which allows it to give customers discounts in quiet periods.

Customers in Leicester Square can expect to pay around £17.50 per adult ticket for science fiction epic Interstellar, which stars Matthew McConaughey.

In Odeon's other West End branch, fans would pay £17.90 for the film, and in Kensington they would be charged around £13.45. In Muswell Hill, an adult Interstellar ticket would cost around £11.70.

But customers of Birmingham's New Street Odeon can catch a showing for just £9.20, and customers in Lincoln would pay £9.90.

In Hull, a family of four could see Interstellar for a total of just £18.

Industry blog Film Divider said surcharges for Hollywood blockbusters are being applied across the country.

In a statement Odeon said: "We offer guests a wide choice of films and entertainment and a flexible pricing policy. So like most cinemas and theatres our ticket prices vary depending on location, time of day, day of the week, the type of film we’re showing, seat type, the age of our guests, and the number of people booking at one time (for example family tickets are cheaper than buying separately).

"This gives our guests plenty of choice and the opportunity to enjoy discounts during quieter periods, for example we offered 40% off to many guests during September and October, and all price options are clearly listed in our cinemas and online.”
