Crowds gathered outside Buckingham Palace cheered King Charles as he made his return after being formally declared the new monarch.

King Charles was earlier formally proclaimed King from the balcony of St James’s Palace, which was met with applause and cheers of ‘God Save the King’.

The King was then greeted by thousands of well-wishers as he arrived at Buckingham Palace in the state Rolls-Royce. His Majesty could be seen smiling and waving in response.

The Queen Consort, Camilla, was also cheered by the crowds, to whom she smiled and waved, as she arrived separately at the palace.

American tourists Roger, 59, and Paula Lynch, 55, from Oklahoma, took an early morning train to London from Liverpool, where they are holidaying, to be there.

“He was awesome," said Mr Lynch. "It was worth the wait to be that close to the King.

“He looked right at me. He looked straight at us and I said, ‘we love the King’. This is awesome. We will never be this close to the King again.”

Others made their way to the palace on Saturday morning as a sign of respect to her late Majesty the Queen.

Andy Bow, 57, from Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, was among them.

The armed forces veteran said: "I’m just completely bereft really. I served the Queen while I was in the Army for 14 years. She just means so much to me, she’s everything.

“She’s the mother of our nation I think. I, along with the vast majority of everybody here, are a little bit lost and not sure what’s going to happen so I just felt I had to come down and pay my respects for the last time.”

Sisters Francesca Prescott, 54, and Michela Grigioni, 52, from Sevenoaks, Kent, said their visit to Buckingham Palace was even more emotional after their mother Estelle Hyams died, aged 81, last year.

They said she would have been “over the moon" and “proud" to see them there and would have said: “That’s my girls”.

Ms Prescott said: "It’s emotional because of our mum and watching Charles when he gave that speech yesterday, everyone’s forgetting it’s his loss and no matter how well prepared you may be, when you love a person you never are.”
