The UK could face “severe gale force winds” and a weather warning early next week as Hurricane Helene tears its way across the Atlantic.

Florence is set to batter the east coast of the US from Thursday to Saturday, but Hurricane Helene could leave the UK suffering severe gale force winds next week.

Forecasters from the Met Office suggest the hurricane is set to make its way across the ocean towards the UK in time for Tuesday, possibly bringing gale force winds with it.

A spokeswoman for Met Office said: “As it travels across the water Helene will calm down and eventually there will be remnants of the ex-hurricane.

“There will be wet and windy weather on Tuesday, it’s looking like there could be severe gale force winds. At the moment forecasters think it will hit southern parts of the UK.

“There could be winds of 45 to 55 miles per hour over the south and there could be rain mixed up in that as well, although that’s not the main thing.

“It could be a blustery day or we may even see a warm day, it’s hard to say at the moment. We’ll know a bit more tomorrow and we may issue a wind warning for Tuesday.

“It’s a rapidly moving system and trying to predict the exact track of that is difficult. At the moment we’re thinking we could see gale force winds, or even severe gale force winds.”

The north may also be affected by strong winds as a result of Hurricane Helene, but forecasters will know more as it makes its way across the Atlantic.

Met Office added: “Once we get through Tuesday there may still be residual gales on Wednesday but that will ease up as we go through the week.

“There will be some rain but at the moment it’s not something we think is a great concern.”

Over in the US, Hurricane Florence has been downgraded to a Category 2 storm but is still considered extremely dangerous and life-threatening.
