Headless body in lake: pair quizzed

12 April 2012

Police have arrested two men on suspicion of murdering a man whose decapitated body was found in a lake.

The headless body of Michael Gilbert, 26, was found at the Blue Lagoon in Arlesey, Bedfordshire, on Sunday afternoon.

Two men, aged 22 and 24 and both from Luton, were arrested and remain in custody for questioning at Luton Police Station.

Police said Mr Gilbert was already dead before he was decapitated, but could not give an exact cause of death.

The victim, originally from Luton, was last known to be living in Blackburn in Lancashire, but also had links to Cambridge and King's Lynn.

He is survived by his mother, sister and three brothers, who still live in Luton.

A police spokeswoman said specially-trained family liaison officers confirmed the news that Mr Gilbert's body had been found in the lake wrapped in packaging to his family after detectives identified him through fingerprints.

Another post mortem examination is due to be carried out today to further assess the 26-year-old's injuries.

Specially-trained search officers are still working to locate Mr Gilbert's "outstanding remains", added the spokeswoman.

His body is the sixth to be pulled from the privately-owned Blue Lagoon in the past eight years.
