Five babies in a special care unit have tested positive for the superbug MRSA, health officials said.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said traces of MRSA were detected on the skin of the babies at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.
A spokesman said the babies were not suffering from an MRSA infection, but were "colonised", meaning the bug was found on their bodies.
The infants were now in an isolated ward at the hospital and their conditions were being monitored.
Tom Walsh, infection control manager at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said: "It is not unusual during routine screening to identify patients with MRSA on their skin as it is relatively common in the wider community.
"Normally this does not cause any problems, however staff will continue to closely monitor the condition of these babies until they are discharged."
He added that staff were on hand to give advice and reassurance to the infants' parents.
A spokeswoman for the health board said 14 other babies in the unit were screened for MRSA.
Their test results were negative.
