A little girl who was the subject of a national hunt after she wrote to retail giant John Lewis apologising for accidentally breaking a Christmas decoration has been found.

The five-year-old, known only as Faith, attached two pounds to the letter which was sent to the department store's Cambridge branch.

Store manager Dominic Joyce posted an image of her apology on Twitter, sparking a national search for its author.

Faith was eventually tracked down after Twitter users shared the image hundreds of times using the hashtag #findfaith.

A John Lewis spokeswoman said today Faith had been found but was "very shy" and would not be taking part in media interviews.

In the letter, which features what appears to be a self-portrait, Faith describes breaking the bauble during a visit on Saturday.

It reads: "To John Lewis Cambridge, I'm sorry I broke a Christmas bauble on Saturday. It cost two pounds. Here is the money for it. Sorry again. Faith, aged 5."

Mr Joyce, who shared the original letter, said today: "We'd like to thank everyone who has helped us to find Faith, the response has been overwhelming.

"We wanted to have the opportunity to say thank you and we have now been able to do that. We hope Faith and her family have a very merry Christmas."
