England vs Wales: Firms told to show Euro 2016 showdown to 'motivate staff'

Businesses should screen tomorrow’s eagerly anticipated Euro 2016 clash between England and Wales as a way to motivate staff, a business group has said.

The Institute of Leadership and Management said most workers felt watching the summer’s top sporting events in the office would have a positive impact.

It comes following a survey of 1,100 members in which nearly a third said productivity would increase if TVs are brought into offices to watch the action.

Companies have been urged to allow flexible working, allowing sports-mad staff the opportunity to make up hours after Euro 2016 matches and other sporting events finish.

A separate report found that three out of four human resources directors believe employees are likely to call in sick or make an excuse not to turn up for work, the day after a big game.

Recruitment firm Robert Half said many firms were embracing Euro 2016 as an opportunity to engage with staff.

Managing director Phil Sheridan said: "Companies are increasingly recognising the impact an engaged and motivated workforce can have in achieving business goals and positively impacting the bottom line."

Tomorrow England meet Wales in an all-British clash at Euro 2016 in Lille. The game has been described as a “must win” for the Three Lions.
