Donald Trump has touched down in Scotland amid more protests after a brief but memorable stay in England.

Air Force One flew into Glasgow on Friday evening where Mr Trump is expected to spend the weekend at his Turnberry golf resort.

Thousands of activists gathered in the city's George Square to protest against the US president's visit, after 250,000 marched on streets of London earlier today.

Placards carried by campaigners in Glasgow featured messages including "Give the weans Irn Bru not iron cages" and "Bolt ya rocket and make Scotland great again".

In London, staggering images showed the route from Portland Place to Trafalgar Square packed with demonstrators who have taken issue with Mr Trump’s policies and attitude.

The day began with the unveiling of the Trump baby blimp in Parliament Square, which was crowdfunded by campaigners furious that Mr Trump was being welcomed to the UK.

Later Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was among the speakers in at a rally in Trafalgar Square where he declared: “We are asserting our right to demonstrate, our right to free speech.”

While activists were making their feelings clear, the president met with Theresa May at Chequers for talks on trade, Brexit and Nato.

The leaders gave a joint press conference in which they stood side-by-side to shore up the relationship between the UK and the US.

It came after Mr Trump, in an interview with The Sun newspaper, launched into an extraordinary criticism of the Prime Minister which overshadowed the second day of his UK visit.

The president savaged Mr May's Brexit proposals and warned they would likely kill off any chance of a future trade deal with the US in a bombshell interview.

At the press conference, Mr Trump described the interview as "fake news".

Later the president joined the Queen for tea at Windsor Castle, and the pair appeared in no rush to leave each other's company as their first meeting lasted far longer than scheduled.

The two world figures, joined by first lady Melania Trump, were due to spend around half an hour getting to know each other but it overran by almost 20 minutes.

During the monarch’s 66-year reign there have been 13 American presidents, starting with Harry S Truman. She has now met all of them except one, Lyndon B Johnson.

On Friday evening, Air Force One touched down at 8.22pm at Prestwick Airport. Hundreds of people gathered to watch the plane land at a nearby viewing area set up.

The presidential motorcade was waiting to take Mr Trump and wife Melania to his nearby Turnberry hotel.

The president gave a wave before descending the steps with the first lady.

They were met briefly by Scottish Secretary David Mundell before driving off in a vehicle with the US and Scottish flags displayed on the bonnet.

Mr Mundell said Mr Trump told him he was "pleased to be here" and that the UK's relationship with the US was "very important".
