A British comedian has shown overwhelming support for International Women’s Day by personally replying to anyone who dares ask "when is International Men's Day?" on Twitter.

Richard Herring shot down those who bemoaned the lack of a day of celebration for men as marches kicked off around the world in a bid to tackle inequality.

The comedian, dubbed a pioneer of comedy podcasting, was quick to remind sceptics that International Men’s Day falls on November 19.

He told one person who asked “what date is International Men’s Day this year?”: I don’t think they change the date. It would be confusing. Hopefully they will stick to November 19th or I am going to look quite the Charlie.

Mr Herring quickly reminded another disgruntled tweeter: “It’s November 19th. The weird thing about equality is if women achieve it then men also achieve it. So don’t fight against today if equality is really your aim.”

When Rhys Joseph asked when International Men’s Day falls, he quipped: “November 19th. Please tweet back letting me know what you’re planning to do. Would love to join you.”

The comic, who has worked with high-profile comedians including Simon Pegg and Stephen Fry, used the campaign as an attempt to raise £10,000 for domestic violence charity Refuge.

Writing on a JustGiving Page, he said: “For a few years now I have gone on Twitter to search for people asking, "When's International Men's Day?" to let them know that that is on November 19.

“I do this so that everyone else can get on with celebrating International Women's Day and using it to raise awareness of the issues that affect women. And trying to achieve equality.

“I am not denigrating the people who use IMD to raise awareness. I can't think of anyone who does more to inform people that this day exists. On November 19.

“But if you think about it equality works both ways. So if you think men don't get equality in some areas, then striving for equality will help them too.”
