Calls to spell out Olympics budget

12 April 2012

The British Olympic Association has upped the pressure on ministers to spell out the London 2012 budget "soon" amid concerns over spiralling costs.

Chairman Colin Moynihan said heavy speculation over the bill for the games was damaging, and "absolute clarity" was needed.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek: "It should be (announced) as soon as possible - this debate is not helping the whole Olympic project. It should then be accountable to the public at large."

Mr Moynihan said certainty was also needed on whether the costs of redeveloping 500 acres of East London were included in the quoted price.

"When they do come forward, we will see if they have included in that budget a huge regeneration project in the East End," he said. "What I have asked for is that there should be absolute clarity about the costs that are going to be required to deliver the Games on the Olympic Park."

On Saturday, the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee chairman, John Whittingdale, called on ministers to clarify costs "very soon" following reports the final bill could crest £9bn - several times that set out in the original bid.

The Tory MP stressed that the taxpayer should not write a "blank cheque" for the project.

Shadow Sports Minister Hugh Robertson suggested that the Government was trying to spin issues surrounding the costs.

"If the figures are accurate, they point to financial incompetence on a massive scale. However, if the leaks are an exercise in expectation management the government risks tarnishing the reputation of the 2012 Olympics."

Mr Moynihan insisted that cost hikes should not affect how much cash is committed to help Team GB win medals.
