Bus stop killer Bellfield to appeal

12 April 2012

Bus stop killer Levi Bellfield is to appeal against his conviction and sentence.

Bellfield, 39, was handed a whole life tariff in February after being found guilty of murdering students Marsha McDonnell, 19, and Amelie Delagrange, 22, and the attempted murder of schoolgirl Kate Sheedy, 18.

It is believed that his lawyers lodged an application seeking leave to appeal against the conviction earlier this month.

Detectives suspect Bellfield may be responsible for 20 attacks on women which were never solved.

He is the main suspect in the murder of 13-year-old Milly Dowler in 2002.

During his trial, it emerged that Bellfield, a wheel clamper and former nightclub bouncer from West Drayton, west London, prowled around bus stops and followed buses in search of victims.

He would follow young blonde women, offering them lifts. If they turned him down he would react with rage.

Bellfield attacked Miss McDonnell in February 2003 and Miss Sheedy and Miss Delagrange in May and August 2004 in west London where he lived and worked.

Sentencing the murderer to three life teams, the trial judge said: "You will not be considered for parole and must serve your whole life in prison."

Bellfield refused to go to the Old Bailey sentence hearing at which the judge announced that the killer would die in jail. Police and the families of the murdered women labelled him a coward for not turning up.
