Brown leads Labour to 10-point lead

12 April 2012

Speculation over a possible snap election has reached new heights after Gordon Brown's "bounce" accelerated into a massive 10-point lead over the Tories.

The first double-figure advantage for the new Prime Minister was the biggest in a YouGov poll since before the Iraq war and will pile fresh pressure on under-fire David Cameron.

The Sunday Times-commissioned survey put the governing party up two at 42% while the Tories fell one to 32% amid murmurings over Mr Cameron's leadership.

Mr Brown also registered another healthy lead in an ICM poll for the Sunday Mirror, which put Labour on 39% to the Conservatives' 33%. The Liberal Democrats were on 18% in the ICM poll and 14% with YouGov.

The PM's extended honeymoon was reflected in personal ratings for the two leaders, where Mr Brown's management of a series of crises has helped him soar ahead.

YouGov found 65% of voters believed Mr Brown was doing well - with just 17% saying he was doing badly and 36% expressed pleasant surprise at how he had performed so far.

But a majority (55%) believed Mr Cameron was performing poorly, with 29% saying he was doing well - an almost complete reversal of his score in April.

Reflected in actual voting across the country, the 10-point lead would mean Mr Brown adding around 100 to the 66-seat majority he inherited.

Developments such as the appointment of a new director of election resources have fuelled suggestions he could seek to exploit his popularity by going to the country early.

Some commentators have suggested a poll could come as soon as October while others predict a spring election.
