A British father of three has died on a dream holiday to Machu Picchu.

Steve Mortimer, 68, from Yorkshire, had been planning his seven-week holiday with his wife for 30 years.

He is reported to have been overcome by altitude sickness. He collapsed and died at a bus stop in the Peruvian mountains while waiting to see the 15th-century Inca ruins.

His wife Marian said: "It was horrendous, your worst nightmare."

After her husband's death she was stranded in the country because her passport went in the laundry by mistake.

Mrs Mortimer said her husband was the "kindest, most generous, fun-loving man".

"You only had to be in his company for five minutes - he put everyone at ease. He really was the life and soul of the party,” she said.

"We had the most amazing marriage. I am so lucky to have him in my life.”
