Britain First leaders Paul Golding and Jayda Fransen have had their Twitter accounts suspended amid an international row over far-right tweets.

It comes after the social media site unveiled new rules on abuse and threats of violence last month which come into force today.

All the main accounts of the far-right group have been suspended as part of the firm’s purge.

Anti-Islamic tweets from the group’s deputy leader Ms Fransen’s were retweeted by Donald Trump which sparked a global backlash.

Among the posts shared by the US President were unverified videos titled: “Muslim Destroys a Statue of Virgin Mary!” and “Muslim migrant beats up Dutch boy on crutches!”.

The messages themselves and the US leader’s retweets were condemned, with Prime Minister Theresa May saying he was wrong to share them.

Number 10 at the time said: “Britain First seeks to divide communities through their use of hateful narratives which peddle lies and stoke tensions.

"They cause anxiety to law-abiding people. British people overwhelmingly reject the prejudiced rhetoric of the far-right, which is the antithesis of the values that this country represents – decency, tolerance and respect.

"It is wrong for the President to have done this."

Ms Fransen and leader of Britain First Mr Golding were last week charged with using threatening and abusive words following a rally in Belfast.
