Londoners will narrowly escape a bitter cold snap set to hit the UK over the weekend as arctic air brings subzero temperatures and widespread frost.

An icy blast will hit Britain while rain is expected across the Midlands, Wales and Ireland.

The Met Office has warned temperatures could plummet to -10C in parts of Scotland, and as low as -3C throughout much of the country.

While clear skies are expected, there could be snow showers on higher grounds in the north and sharp frost is expected early on Sunday.

Met Office meteorologist Dean Hall told the Standard: "It's going to be a cold start to the weekend, turning colder.

"A band of cold and rain will move through central England, the Midlands, Wales and Ireland, on Saturday.

"But to the south, south-east and south-west it will be brighter.

"It will be dry in London, but it will still feel cold due to winds from the north-east."

London can expect temperatures between 5C and 7C during the day over the weekend, with lows of 1C at night.

But elsewhere, overnight on Saturday temperatures are set to plunge below freezing as a severe frost settles across Scotland.

Mr Hall added: "Northern England, Scotland and the North East will be fine and dry but we could see some wintry showers, a light dusting of snow, over the Penines."

As Scotland drops to double minus figures, much of the UK will be between 0C and -3C.

The plunging temperatures come after high winds swept across England and Wales earlier this week.

A fresh severe weather warning for high winds was issued on Thursday after Storm Eleanor battered Britain with gusts of up to 100mph, plunging tens of thousands of homes into darkness and hitting travel links.
