‘Bosses should act as school governors’

Firms should insist all senior staff become governors of local schools, the head of the Ofsted education watchdog said today.

Sir Michael Wilshaw told the Policy Exchange think tank in London that too many governing bodies were ill-informed and insufficiently skilled. He said a national database of potential governors should be set up, and they should be paid in some cases, to boost standards.

He urged businesses to follow the example of Rolls-Royce, which he said encourages managers to act as local school governors.
