The body of a woman has been dragged from flood water after reports of someone being swept away by the River Derwent in Derbyshire.

Emergency services were called to a stretch of the river in Darley Dale, close to Matlock, in the early hours of Friday morning, Derbyshire Police said.

The force said: “The woman was reported as having been swept away by flood water in Rowsley and the body of what is believed to be the same woman was found in Darley Dale and was recovered at 10.40am.

“The family of the woman have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this time. Formal identification has yet to take place.”

The tragedy comes after images emerged of a number of Yorkshire villages submerged in flood water.

The Environment Agency has hundreds of flood alerts in place, with some areas categorised with the most severe warning where there is a 'risk to life'.

One Derbyshire woman was rescued from her home and carried through high water on a man’s back as flooding continued to affect families on Yarborough Terrace in Doncaster.

Another resident, 24-year-old Lacey Hanrahan, told how she and her baby had to be taken on a boat when water started coming into her home.

She said: “I live down the end where there’s a dip in the road, so we were one of the first to be affected.

“It got to the point where I wasn’t able to walk out, so I was taken out on the boat.

“I just can’t believe how deep the water has got.”

Police cars surround the area as rescue teams put down sandbags.

One woman, who has lived in her home on the street for more than 20 years, said the downstairs of her property had filled with water at around 7am.

“I’ve never known it to be this bad”, she told a Press Association reporter.

Another woman, who did not wish to be named, said she will have to house her daughter and grandchildren for the next few days as a result of the flooding.

She said: “We’ve just taken the decision to get out of here as soon as possible – it’s dangerous as it is and it’ll only get worse.”

Desperate people who have been affected by the flash flooding have already begun trying to deal with the long-term consequences.

A number of people and businesses have set up crowdfunding pages to help them take care of the wreckage after the water has gone.

Barnsley resident Wendy Rawson has set up a Go Fund Me page for people who live on Lang Avenue Lundwood and have been evacuated from their homes.

Another was set up by the owners of what they say is the oldest pub in the UK, dating back to 1150AD.

Nine-hundred-year-old Mill Of The Black Monks has been hit with flooding three times losing its landlords thousands of pounds.
