Alert as temperatures set to soar

12 April 2012

Britain could see the warmest weather of the year so far next week, forecasters said, as the Met Office issued a heat warning.

Temperatures could reach 30C by the middle of the week and it will feel muggy, according to Meteogroup, the weather division of the Press Association.

Forecaster Rachel Vince said it will be warm with some showers on Sunday, and the theme will continue into next week.

She said: "It continues through the first half of the week, very warm and very muggy. We might see temperatures picking up to 30C by Wednesday. It's not going to be wall to wall sunshine, showers will break out in the afternoon.

"The most prone areas are through the central part of the country, as showers develop over land at this time of the year.

"But most parts of the UK will see some sunshine."

The weather will be similar towards the end of the week and into next weekend, she said.

A "heat health" warning was issued by the Met Office for next week, because night time temperatures could remain as high as 18C in some areas.

Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, Andy Page, added: "The very warm conditions will last well into next week, with the hottest days of the summer so far and a 60% chance of reaching 32C."

The hottest day of the year so far was recorded at Heathrow Airport last Thursday, when the mercury reached 28C.
