12 April 2012

Two British soldiers killed in separate incidents in southern Afghanistan are due to be named.

The servicemen, both from 3rd Battalion The Rifles, died near Sangin in Helmand province one day apart.

On Friday morning a bomb blast claimed one of the lives of the two fallen 3 Rifles soldiers. The explosion occurred while he was on foot patrol in region.

A second serviceman was killed during a firefight with insurgents.

Next of kin have been informed in both cases. Neither deaths are linked to the ongoing Moshtarak operation.

The latest deaths takes the number of British forces killed in Afghanistan since the conflict began in 2001 to 270.

The 3rd Battalion The Rifles has suffered three deaths over the last week.

On Tuesday Corporal Richard Green, 23, from Reading, was shot dead while at a checkpoint near Sangin.
