Train services in south London have been hit with disruption after a lorry crashed into a railway bridge this afternoon.

The truck hit a bridge near Eden Park station in Beckenham at about 3.20pm, knocking some scaffolding out of place.

Southeastern train services between Elmers End and Hayes have been cancelled as engineers work to make the line safe.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: "We don't want to take any risks.

"There are engineers on site at the moment.

"Currently for safety reasons no trains can pass over that bridge."

A spokesman for Southeastern said: "We can't run services between Hayes and Elmers End but tickets can be used on replacement buses."

Delays and cancellations are expected to last until 8pm at least.

Some buses are on diversion following the closure of Elmers End Road, where the lorry struck the bridge.
