Sadiq Khan has backed the idea of holding a race to see who can get the furthest with his new bus-hopper ticket.

The new Mayor of London used his official Twitter account to tweet support for a plan to pit bus users against each other in a race with the clock on public transport.

It would see passengers taking advantage of Mr Khan’s new “Hopper” ticket, an innovation announced this week which will allow people to make two bus journeys within a 60-minute window from September.

The race was first suggested by Hackney Labour councillor Jonathan McShane and has since caused a storm of interest online.

Today Mr Khan weighed in with: “Love the idea of a #bushopperrace - a fun challenge and great way to explore London.”

After Cllr McShane suggested the competition should be annual event, internet users piled in with advice on which routes would take passengers furthest.

Reddit user Harberton ventured a circuitous route from Croydon to the Royal Albert Hall via Heathrow, claiming the distance of 35 miles could be covered in the time-frame.
