This is the dramatic moment a motorist became confused with the sat-nav and drove onto the tracks of the Croydon Tramlink during the rush hour.

As the car hit two bollards and then became lodged on the track with a tram was just minutes away.

This dramatic picture, released by Bob Crow of the RMT union was taken just after it happened with the car's headlights still blazing.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at Sandilands close to Croydon. Tram services were halted with the next service just minutes away.

The woman driver was shocked but otherwise unhurt.

It happened 5.30 pm on Friday night where a particularly busy section of road crosses the track.

Mr Crow said: "it is a miracle there wasn't a major accident as a result of this latest breach of safety and security on Britain's transport system.

"The incident also exposes the real impact of cuts to security and staffing which has left our transport services vulnerable to this kind of madness."

A spokesman for Transport for London (Tfl,) which operates the tramlink, confirmed the driver had become confused with the sat-nav.

"There were no injuries and the car was removed quickly," he said.

The Director of London Tramlink, Sharon Thompson, said: “On Friday evening an inexplicable error by a car driver resulted in a car being driven onto a section of London Tramlink track.

"The incident was immediately identified by staff who with the aid of BTP officers quickly removed the car.

"Tramlink has an excellent safety record and the number of incidents involving trams – the vast majority of which are minor and due to third party error – has decreased by 45% in the last year."
