Mid-week travel meltdown caused by Tube delays and cable theft

The Tube: running its most reliable service in a decade, according to Boris Johnson

Tens of thousands of Tube and mainline rail commuters faced major disruption today due to a series of breakdowns.

On the Tube early services on the District and Piccadilly lines were part suspended due to a signal failure at Acton Town.

Piccadilly line services remained suspended into the morning peak between Acton Town and Uxbridge.

The Bakerloo line and London Overground were both part suspended due to late finish of night engineering work at Kenton.

Mainline Southeastern trains from Darford to Charing Cross were delayed due to power supply problems between Charlton and Greenwich.

Virgin Trains and London Midland services to and from the capital were delayed after cable thieves struck again - this time stealing 100 metre of cable close to Birmingham International station. This reduced all trains to a crawl.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: "Thieves struck again during the night. Our engineers are on scene and we will restore a full service as quickly as possible but the theft is causing disruption for a lot of passengers."

First Great Western services suffered delays due to a broken down train between Reading and Basingstoke.
