Holidaymakers heading for Easter getaways faced major queues at London's airports today as the annual travel chaos took hold.

Heathrow passengers complained of “shocking service” and “huge queues”, with some spending more than 45 minutes in passport queues.

It comes as around 868,000 people prepare to travel through the airport between Good Friday and Easter Monday, including a reported 200,000 extra families compared to a normal Friday to Monday.

Disgruntled passengers took to social media to complain and share pictures of the huge queues to get to the departures area which had already developed on Maundy Thursday.

Grant Lipton wrote on Twitter: “Huge queues at passport control. Over 45 minutes so far with no end in site (sic).”

Tony Williams described it as a "shocking service yet again".

There were also reports of cars queuing for an hour in the airport’s access tunnel on Thursday morning, with some passengers giving up and making the rest of the journey to their terminal on foot.

Passengers at Gatwick also complained of the "worst queues at passport control ever" late on Wednesday evening, while Stansted and Luton were hit with queues as well.

The traditional chaos on the country’s motorways is also expected to return as Britons head off in their cars for the bumper four-day Bank Holiday weekend.

As many as 17 million drivers are expected to take to the roads over the weekend, with drivers advised to avoid motorways between 10am-2pm on Good Friday.

Network Rail has also warned passengers that engineering works taking place over the Easter weekend will cause disruption for rail passengers.

The line between Liverpool Street and Essex will be closed, hitting Great Anglia and TfL Rail services.

Other services will be subjected to diversions and speed restrictions, with Network Rail advising passengers to check routes before travelling.
