When developers Crystal Dynamics rebooted the Tomb Raider video game series in 2013, telling the origin story of Lara Croft, the game showed her in a new light: as a survivor.

Now, to celebrate the release of sequel Rise of the Tomb Raider, eight people are attempting a survival task of their own in central London.

OK, so Southwark Street isn’t exactly the Siberian wilderness as seen in the latest game, but London residents will know that the rain can be truly miserable.

The contestants are part of a 24-hour live action billboard, tasked with remaining standing while being placed under artificial extreme weather conditions. The last person standing wins a Rise of the Tomb Raider-inspired adventure trip.

As well as being able to stream live video of the challenge online, the public can vote which type of weather the contestants should stand through next – drizzling rain, sweltering heat, or an icy blast of snow.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is released on Xbox One and Xbox 360 exclusively on November 13
