The new smartphone battleground is all about speed and OnePlus is raising the stakes.

The Chinese company has developed a new partnership with racing company McLaren to release a limited edition McLaren 6T phone with 10GB RAM and promises a day's power with only 20 minutes of charging.

Previously, OnePlus’s mantra was a day's power in half an hour, thanks to its Dash Charge technology. This has now been upgraded to Warp Charge 30, which delivers 30 watts of power to the device to charge it up, without slowing down even when the phone is in use.

The 6T Mclaren Edition is taking the title as the world’s first smartphone release with 10GB RAM. Technically, Oppo scooped it first with the Find X, but this device is yet to go on sale.

This means that when using the phone for watching films in 4K, to play Fortnite, or to switch between apps, there should be zero lag in between actions. OnePlus has always prided itself on the speed of its devices, so it will be interesting to really put this to the test.

Speaking about the launch, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau, said: “The OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition is stunning. Engineered with exact precision and new technology we’ve never used before, it’s our fastest, most cutting-edge device ever - the epitome of craftsmanship. It’s the start of an exciting partnership with McLaren, giving people a feeling of incredible speed and performance.”

McLaren’s design signatures, including that bright Papaya Orange colour, are noticeable in all aspects of the phone. There’s an orange streak running along the edge of the phone, fading into the all-black design. The design under the glass back is a nod to McLaren’s carbon fibre technology, found in all of its cars. And there are orange hints throughout OnePlus’s Oxygen OS software.

There’s also an emphasis on augmented reality. The 6T McLaren Edition comes with a book, detailing the history of the two companies and their partnership. Using the McLaren AR app, every image comes to life. One picture may bring up a slideshow of historical McLaren images, whilst another delivers a video of the 2016 launch of the OnePlus 3 in New York, featuring interviews from fans in Times Square.

This is a really exciting feature and a way for OnePlus to make unboxing the device a real experience.

Elsewhere, the device is the same as the rest of the 6T range. There’s a 6.4-inch AMOLED display, in-screen fingerprint scanner, a 16-megapixel camera with f.17 aperture supported by a 20-megapixel camera, and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 processor. There's also 256GB of storage.

Smartphone companies love to partner with racing car brands. In the past, there have been partnerships between Porsche and Blackberry and recently, Porsche and Huawei, who collaborated on a mammoth €2,000 Mate 20 device.

However, unlike other device and car partnerships, the 6T McLaren Edition is priced at an affordable £649, in keeping with OnePlus’s mission to make the best tech accessible to its customer. That’s just under a £100 more than the top 6T model, for a lot of extra power.

The device will be on sale in the UK from December 12 at OnePlus.com.
