Academics at a London University have created an interactive map which shows the UK's - and London's - most used surnames.
University College London researchers used the electoral roll to reveal the map of names and combined it with Twitter usernames taken from millions of online posts.
UCL's Dr Muhammad Adnan created the map along with colleague Alistair Leak.
Dr Adnan said the London data showed just how different the city is compared with the rest of the UK.
He said: "The distribution of names in London differs completely from the rest of the country. It reflects statistics that show 37 per cent of London's residents are born outside the UK.
"The data clearly shows names like Patel in North West London. In Whitechapel and Mile end there are Bangladeshi names.
"In Harrow and Heathrow you see a lot of Sikh names. In Hampstead heath there is a Jewish population so we see the name Cohen.
"The project was designed to collate real world data with social network data and see how the population is distributed around the country.
"In London you can clearly see the real world difference as how people are distributed - as opposed to in the virtual world, using the data from Twitter."
He added that the Twitter data was "noisy," meaning less clear, as people can have more than one Twitter account.
"We found it very interesting to see the visualisation of the areas of ethnic mix in this way," Dr Adnan said.
Researchers analysed 2007 Electoral Roll data to come up with surnames in each of the 8920 wards across Great Britain. Surnames were coded in different colors according to their origin.
They analysed 32 million Twitter usernames to collate the social media data.
