Augmented reality (AR) is seeping into all aspects of technology, from apps on your phone to sunglasses. Now it’s going to amp up your accessories game.

LA-based concept brand Virtual Super Land, set up by Londoner Orsolya Szabo and Natasha Smith, is teaming up with phone case maker Casetify to launch the world’s first AR phone case.

Simply download the Virtual Super Land app (iOS only) and aim it at the case’s green visuals to see it come to life. By appropriating the green-screen tech used in films and weather reports, the phone case and its design are transformed by different filters, turning it into something else entirely.

Tap to snap a shot of the tech-infused designs, or hold to create a video and share it on social media.

Available for iPhone, as well as a special strap for the Apple Watch, the AR-enabled tech accessories are the next step in Virtual Super Land’s plan to integrate tech and fashion in new and exciting ways.

The company has collaborated with Orly on a nail varnish to transform your nail art every day of the week and currently has a new collection with the US brand Fred Segal, though you have to take a trip to Sunset Boulevard in LA to have a browse.

Believe it or not, AR accessories and clothing could be one way to solve the issues of fast fashion. With influencers, and aspiring ones, posting their #outfitoftheday on Instagram (264.6 million posts), the pressure is on to have a new look every single time.

The environmental impact is astounding: discarded clothing made from non-biodegradable fabrics sit in landfill for up to 200 years according to Ellen McArthur Foundation.

Norwegian brand Carlings launched a digital clothing collection last year to try to tackle this problem. Customers chose a product and upload an image of themselves. Then, a designer “dresses” them virtually, and sends back the image for them to post on social media.

The brand even tapped CGI influencers, including Perl, to “model” its first drop. Carlings says the collection is “an experiment, meant to spark the conversation about how we can reduce real production waste in the future”. Profits from the sales of the digital items go towards WaterAid.

Sustainability is something Virtual Super Land has in mind with its products. The AR aspect means people can “own” multiple products in one, whether its a Casetify phone case or a Fred Segal T-shirt, at a minimised cost to the environment and their wallet. Szabo says Virtual Super Land wants to make technology “digestible and accessible for all”.

It’s certainly making it a lot more fun too.
