According to Kevin Costner, Princess Diana was set to star in a sequel to The Bodyguard. The actor told PeopleTV that the late princess was interested in playing a role in the film.

In the 1992 movie Costner played a bodyguard tasked with protecting Whitney Houston’s character, popstar Rachel Marron. It was Houston's acting debut. While the film was panned by critics, it became a box office hit, making $411 million worldwide. The film was originally written in the 1970s and set to star Steve McQueen and Diana Ross.

“The studio liked the idea of doing a Bodyguard 2,” Costner told People. Princess Diana would have taken a role “in the same kind of capacity as Whitney. Nobody really knew that for about a year,” he said.

Costner explained that Sarah Ferguson set up the conversation between Costner and Princess Diana. “She never said ‘What about me? I’m a princess too.’ She was just so supportive of this idea.”

The 64-year-old actor told Princess Diana that he was going to write the part with her in mind and they discussed the role.

“I just remember her being incredibly sweet on the phone, and she asked the question, ‘Are we going to have, like a kissing scene?'" he remembered. “She was a little nervous because her life was very governed. And I said, ‘Yeah, there’s going to be a little bit of that, but we can make that OK too.'"

The first script arrived on Costner's desk the day before Princess Diana tragically died on August 31, 1997.
