Former prime ministerTheresa May appeared to be in good spirits as she danced and clapped among a crowd at Henley Festival, just hours after Boris Johnson resigned on Thursday.

Videos of Mrs May show her enthusiastically bopping along to Craig David as he sung his smash hit ‘Nothing Like This’ to a lively crowd at the festival in Oxfordshire.

Mrs May attended the event with her husband Phillip and was pictured laughing and smiling enthusiastically.

Just hours earlier she had addressed Mr Johnson’s resignation during a speech at the Institute for Government.

Mrs May was asked what she would want to see in the new prime minister and said: “ “I would want see somebody who wants to concentrate on healing division, who wants to unite the country and unite the party.”

“The key task of somebody coming in as Prime Minister is going to be dealing with the current situation with the cost-of-living crisis.”

She did not mention Mr Johnson directly in her speech but jokingly congratulated the institue on the timing of the lecture.

The race is now on for the next prime minister, with Tom Tugendhat the first contender to throw his hat in the ring.

Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak, defence secretary Ben Wallace and Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi are among the favourites for the Tory crown after Mr Johnson stepped down following a slew of ministerial resignations.

On Monday, elections will take place to the executive of the backbench 1922 Committee which will then set out the rules and timetable for the leadership contest.
