Unison backs Ed Miliband for Labour leader

Ed Miliband's odds on becoming Labour leader were slashed today after he won the backing of one of Britain's biggest unions.

Unison, with 1.3million members, endorsed the shadow climate change secretary after a consultation with its rank and file. It followed Mr Miliband's coup last week in winning GMB union backing, and prompted Ladbrokes to cut his odds from 9/4 to 2/1.

Earlier, fellow leadership hopeful David Miliband revealed he would be "very happy" to serve under his brother should he succeed Gordon Brown. After the electoral college of party members, union affiliates, MPs and MEPs has been balloted, the winner will be named in September.
