The Greens have stood down in more marginal seats around the country to help Labour beat the Tories in their so-called “progressive alliance”.

Labour’s Ruth Cadbury, standing in Brentford & Isleworth, said she would not normally welcome electoral pacts but this election is “different”.

She is defending a majority of 465 and is hoping the Greens 2000 votes in 2015 will transfer to her so she can beat Tory challenger Mary McLeod.

Ms Cadbury said: “Like many in all the main national parties, I would not have previously supported the withdrawal of candidates, but this election is different.

“The Greens and I have much in common, we share aims to safeguard and improve our environment.”

The Greens have also decided to stand down in Derby North, the second most marginal seat in the country held by Labour with just 41 votes.

This follows their decision to stand down in Eltham, Richmond Park, Twickenham and Ealing Central & Acton.

UKIP are releasing their list of candidates today in the General Election with expectations they will fight 400 of the 650 available seats - far fewer than in 2015.

Their decision not to stand in Carshalton and Wallington where the Lib Dems are in a close run battle with the Tories has led to claims that the Conservatives have “morphed into UKIP”.
