A Conservative MP who claimed he could not survive on wages of £67,000 per year has put his Westminster mansion on the market for £16.75million.

Windsor MP Adam Afriyie is selling his Grade II* Listed Georgian house, which has views of the Palace of Westminster, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The 49-year-old politician, who previously told Newsnight that MPs could not be expected "to scrabble around on a salary of £67,000", will have doubled his money on his home if he gets the asking price, the newspaper reported.

He is said to be considering a move to west London with his wife and five children.

He is said to have bought the luxury property, which dates back to 1772, for £7.25million in November 2005.

The seven bedroom house is a stone's throw away from the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey.

It boasts four ensuite bathrooms, a gym, a wine cellar and a roof terrace.

In an online description, estate agents Hathaways described the house as one which "exudes elegance".

It said: "The house has a mansard roof complete with dormer windows, a parapet and two impressive chimney stacks finely finishing the façade of this beautifully presented building.

"Upon entering, a number of key features can be seen, most notably an imposing drawing room that spans the width of the first floor, a formal dining room laid out on the ground floor, a spacious master bedroom suite arranged on the second and a private garden to the rear.

"It is enriched with character and exudes elegance. The house enjoys historic views at the front over the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey and the gardens of Westminster School."

When he chaired the House of Commons probe into MPs expenses in 2011, Mr Afriyie recommended a new system of flat rate allowances, as he criticised the expenses system. He has not claimed expenses on his second home.

His spokeswoman told the Standard that he would not comment on his "private life".

She said: "Adam doesn't comment on his private life but as we've said before; people do move house from time to time."
