It was a visit intended to hatch support for his party's European election campaign.

But as Nigel Farage stepped out of a car to greet would-be voters, the Ukip leader was met with the sticky gloop of protest, rather than the embrace of a welcoming crowd.

And so he became the latest politician to be pelted with an egg.

Here we look at others who have had their policies confronted with a protein protest:

1. John Prescott: The man once dubbed Thumper to Tony Blair's Bambi lived up to his nickname as the Deputy Prime Minister landed a left hook on a protester in Rhyl, Wales, during a Labour rally in May 2001. The Labour grandee (pictured above) became embroiled in the scuffle after he was struck with an egg.

2. Nick Griffin: The BNP leader had to be bundled into his car by a bodyguard after being struck with an egg in the run-up to the local and European elections in June 2009. It meant Griffin had to abandon a press conference outside the Houses of Parliament after protesters barracked him.

3. George Galloway: Despite being mobbed by supporters, others armed with eggs could have been accused of showing a lack of Respect to the MP following his controversial victory in the Bradford West by-election in March 2012.

4. Nigel Farage: The Ukip leader was visiting Nottingham today to rally support for his East Midlands candidates for the European elections, but was hit by the egg as he arrived in the city centre. Nottinghamshire Police later confirmed a man from the city had been arrested on suspicion of assault.

5. David Cameron: The Prime Minister has a long association with Cornwall, enhanced by the Duchy being the birthplace of and etymological inspiration for daughter Florence Rose Endellion in August 2010. But it was a trip to a college in the Devon-facing town of Saltash four months earlier which left the premier with less favourable memories - and an egg stain on his shirt.

6. Ed Miliband:

The Labour leader tried to laugh off the embarrassment as he was pelted with eggs during a campaign visit to south London last August. He said: "This is not the first time it's happened to me, I'm sure it's not the last."

7. Ruth Kelly: The then-Education Secretary had been due to give evidence against a Fathers 4 Justice campaigner in February 2006. But the Labour MP for Bolton West was struck with an egg as she left Salford Magistrates' Court.
