Labour rising star Sadiq Khan today reveals he may decide to run for London Mayor in 2016.

The shadow minister for London, Ed Miliband’s closest lieutenant, admitted he would be tempted in an interview with today’s Evening Standard.

He said: “If I was at the edge of the box and the ball came free, and I thought I had the best chance of shooting and scoring, then I might do it. But let’s see if the ball comes free.”

Mr Khan is the man in charge of Labour’s campaigning in London.

In a rallying call to Labour’s party conference tomorrow, he will declare: “London holds the keys to Downing Street for Ed Miliband.”

He will announce to the Brighton hall plans for the first ever co-ordinated manifestos for the 32 borough elections, European election and four executive mayoral elections next year, the 2015 general election and the mayoral campaign a year later.

Mr Khan, who is also shadow justice secretary, will say: “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to radically change the political direction of London.”
