Activists beamed old footage of Boris Johnson criticising the "stupefying ignorance" of Donald Trump onto the side of Big Ben.

The anti-Brexit protest group Led by Donkeys has begun to use the capital’s most prominent buildings to broadcast messages of opposition against the president on Monday as he arrived in London for his first official UK state visit.

In one public display, the group broadcast a video onto the world-famous clock tower, featuring former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson criticising Mr Trump.

It comes after the US President publicly endorsed Mr Johnson last week to replace outgoing Theresa May as Prime Minister, calling him "a very good guy".

But in the footage taken from a 2015 interview Mr Johnson gave while Mayor of London, he said Mr Trump displayed “quite stupefying ignorance” and deemed him “unfit” to be president.

Mr Johnson was responding to remarks made by then-candidate Mr Trump about London while he was trying to justify his presidential campaign comments about banning Muslims from entering the US.

At the time, Mr Trump said some areas in London were “so radicalised the police are afraid of their lives.”

Mr Johnson called the comment “complete and utter nonsense."

Speaking in December 2015, Mr Johnson said: “As a city where more than 300 languages are spoken, London has a proud history of tolerance and diversity and to suggest there are areas where police officers cannot go because of radicalisation is simply ridiculous."

"Crime has been falling steadily both in London and in New York - the only reason I wouldn't go to some parts of New York is the real risk of meeting Donald Trump."

It comes as Mr Trump recently expressed his support for Mr Johnson, who is seeking to replace outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May.

Mr Trump said the politician would make an "excellent" prime minister.

He told The Sun last week: “I like him. I have always liked him. I don't know that he is going to be chosen, but I think he is a very good guy, a very talented person."

Led by Donkeys pointed out Mr Johnson’s historically unflattering comments, tweeting on Monday: "Hey @realDonaldTrump, you just endorsed your Brexit buddy @BorisJohnson but he said some VERY NASTY things about you and he doesn't want you to know.

"So we projected his words onto Big Ben."
