More than 100,000 people have registered to vote in the last 48 hours as the prospect of a general election looms.

The chaos surrounding Boris Johnson’s premiership and Brexit has seen the odds of an election in October drop to 4/6 according to bookmakers Ladbrokes.

Mr Johnson said last night that he would table a motion under the fixed term parliament act today to try and trigger a poll.

And research released today has shown that 52,408 people registered to vote on Monday, and another 64,485 registered on Tuesday.

This is a massive hike compared to the weekday average of 27,000 for the past month.

More than half of the applications were from youngsters, as 58 per cent of those signing up were aged under 34 years old.

Only 8 per cent of registrations came from over 65s.

If a snap general election were to take place on October 15 - as might be the case - the deadline for applying to register to vote would be September 27.
