Treasury minister Mel Stride has been appointed Commons Leader following Andrea Leadsom's resignation, Downing Street has announced.

Mrs Leadsom announced her resignation from the government yesterday evening over Theresa May's new Brexit proposal.

She said she "no longer believed" that the government's Brexit approach "could deliver on the referendum result".

In a letter to the Prime Minister, Mrs Leadsom said she did not believe that the UK will be "truly sovereign" through the deal proposed, and said a second referendum would be "dangerously divisive".

Mr Stride is the MP for Central Devon and former Financial Secretary to the Treasury.

Jesse Norman, who was a transport minister, has been made Financial Secretary to the Treasury, replacing Mr Stride.

Michael Ellis, previously the arts minister, has been appointed as a Transport minister.

Backbencher Rebecca Pow has been made a junior minister at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
