Millions of people across the UK took to the polls today to cast their vote in the local elections.

All seats in London's borough councils are up for election, as well as mayoral elections in Hackney, Lewisham, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Watford while the first-ever mayor for the Sheffield City region will also be chosen.

Once the ballots close, councils will begin counting the results.

Most will be expected to come through during the course of the night – with the busiest period being the early hours of the morning.

But some boroughs - Bromley, Hackney, Haringey, Harrow, Hounslow, Islington, Kingston, Lambeth, Lewisham, Newham, Tower Hamlets - are counting their votes on Friday so their results are expected to come through later.
