Labour's deputy leader Harriet Harman risked controversy today after allegedly suggesting “pretty” people are not interested in politics.

She is said to have made the remark to Cllr Karen Danczuk, wife of Labour MP for Rochdale, Simon Rochdale.

She tweeted: “When I first met Harriet Harman she said I was far too pretty to be interested in politics & should be in Girls Aloud.”

Ms Harman could not be contacted in time for comment and it was not clear whether she made the remark in a light-hearted way or at all.

But the claim threatened to cause fresh embarrassment to the senior Labour MP who is already facing criticism for touring the country in a pink van as part of a “woman-to-woman” campaign.

She has been accused of “patronising” women with the choice of colour for the van, with comparisons being made on Twitter that it looks like a Barbie Doll vehicle.

Cllr Danczuk has shot to fame by posting sexy “cleavage selfies” on Twitter and has 38,000 followers.
