Gay Jews have been honoured for their fight for equality at a unique reception in Parliament.

Rabbi Lionel Blue, the openly gay broadcaster, hailed the first Westminster event for the gay Jewish community as a “modern miracle”.

More than 100 activists, rabbis, MPs and peers gathered at Westminster to mark both Chanukah and the passing of the same-sex marriage laws.

Rabbi Blue added: “Chanukah is a festival of wonder — tonight is truly a moment of wonder.” Communities minister Stephen Williams said they were “outriders” changing attitudes.

“Several strands of the Jewish faith are now showing that you can be entirely comfortable with your sexuality and your religion,” said the minister, who is openly gay.

Alma Smith, of campaign group Keshet UK which organised the event, hoped it would encourage more people to “share our message of acceptance”.
