Jeremy Corbyn blasted "rude" journalists as he was quizzed on military action in Syria.

The Labour leader was greeted by a media scrum as he left his Islington home today ahead of a crucial shadow cabinet meeting.

In a video clip of the exchange, a terse Mr Corbyn asks reporters and photographers: "Would you mind away please so I can get in the car?"

He added: "You're actually very rude, the way you behave."

Mr Corbyn then climbed into the back seat of the silver people carrier and shut the door on the crowd.

The ill-tempered exchange came as Mr Corbyn faced increasing pressure over his plans to impose a party line on a vote this week on Syrian air strikes.

He was due to tell shadow cabinet members if he would allow a free vote or not amid deep internal divisions on how to combat Islamic State.

A draft motion on the issue is likely to be put to a Commons vote on Wednesday.

Shadow International Development Secretary Diane Abbott voiced support for a whip in an endorsement of Mr Corbyn's anti-war stance after a split on the Labour front bench left the party in turmoil during the weekend.

She told BBC Radio 4: "The problem about a free vote is it hands victory to Cameron on these air strikes, it hands victory to him on a plate. Party members and, increasingly, the country, want to see us oppose these air strikes ... and that would mean a three-line whip.”
