Former Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith “rapped” Eminem lyrics on television in a jibe at Labour’s Diane Abbott.

Mr Duncan Smith, who was work and pensions secretary from 2010 to 2016, used the foul-mouthed US rapper’s lyrics from ‘Lose Yourself’ to mock the shadow home secretary.

It came after Ms Abbott was ridiculed for a car crash interview last week in which she clammed up and gave inaccurate figures when asked about the cost of Labour policies on policing.

During an appearance on Good Morning Britain alongside Labour’s Chuka Umunna – who pointed at Mr Duncan Smith and declared he was “rapping” – the former minister broke into verse at presenter Piers Morgan’s prompting.

Saying the song ‘Lose Yourself’ contained “some lyrics for Diane Abbott”, Mr Duncan Smith recited the verse: “He opens his mouth but the words don’t come out / He’s choking now / everybody’s joking now / and the clock’s run out”.

Morgan described the incident lightheartedly as “one of the great iconic cultural moments I’ve probably ever experienced on this sofa”.

It comes as a battle continues to rage in New Zealand about whether an election campaign broadcast by the country’s National Party allegedly based on the hit ‘Lose Yourself’ represents a copyright infringement.

The party’s lawyers insist it was a track called ‘Eminem-esque’ which they bought from a stock music library.
