An 11-year-old girl forced to live in one room with her family has shared her "embarrassment" at admitting to school friends that she "sleeps with her parents".

Stephen Timms, Labour MP for East Ham, posted an image of a letter he had received from the child on Twitter.

It read: “I live with my mum and my dad and my brother, we all live in one room.”

The Year 6 pupil added that she “really wanted to sleep in her own room” and said: “I don’t want to tell my friends that I sleep with my parents.”

Mr Timms shared the letter with the caption: “A letter from an 11 year old constituent. Her family of four lives in one room. Increasingly, not uncommon.”

Speaking to the Standard, the MP added: “Housing problems are getting worse. There is an unanswerable case for a big new investment in social housing. We can't afford to wait much longer."

Wes Streeting, Labour MP for Ilford North, branded the letter “heartbreaking” and said: “I've also been approached by children in primary school with similar stories about their hardship.”
