One in two voters back some of the proposals in Labour’s radical General Election manifesto, a poll has found.

The ComRes survey for the Daily Mirror found 52 per cent backed Labour's proposals - set out in a leaked draft of the manifesto - to renationalise the railways with 22 per cent against.

Nationalising the energy market was supported by 49 per cent with 24 per cent against and 28 per cent, while 50 per cent backed re-nationalisation of the Royal Mail with 25 per cent opposed.

Banning zero hours contracts was supported by 71 per cent with just 16 per cent against, and 65 per cent said they agreed with raising income tax on those earning more than £80,000 a year with 24 per cent opposed.

However just 30 per cent agreed that Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn should be given a fair chance at leading the country while 56 per cent said he would be a "disaster" as prime minister.

Experts dubbed the manifesto the “most expensive suicide note in history” after the leak this week.

The document was unanimously approved by Labour’s national executive committee and will ensure “nobody is ignored, nobody is forgotten, nobody is left behind", Mr Corbyn said.

ComRes interviewed 1,021 adults online on May 11.
